An adverse event is any unfavorable medical occurrence in a patient or clinical-trial participant. It does not necessarily have a causal relationship with treatment.

An adverse event may be an unfavorable sign (including an abnormal laboratory finding), symptom or disease that is temporally associated with use of a medicinal product, whether or not it is considered related to that product.
